Okay, I know this is about 5 days late, but I really wanted to write about my new favorite tradition when the New Year comes around. That tradition is setting a time to reflect on the past year and make goals for the up coming year, in an organized approach.

This is a technique introduced by author and career coach Jenny Blake. In the video she explains why a “mind map” is key to making your new year a great one.

The tradition that Johnny and I started this year is filling out ‘A Year in Review’, which is little more extensive than year mapping. It takes a little more time and little more effort, but we are crossing our fingers that the payout come next December will be worth it! Johnny introduced his family and myself to the booklet YearCompass┬álast year. Of course we had the booklets all printed (it is about a 1o page booklet) and never got around to filling it out! Now I look back at the last NYE longingly and wish so badly I would have just taken the time to reflect and set goals for 2017. This very feeling was what motivated me to make it happen this year.

Here is how the booklet is described on the website: YearCompass is a booklet that helps close your year and plan the next one. In the routine of everyday life it’s easy to lose sight of your true goals and aspirations. And even though we all have dreams, only a few of us plan for them. Effectively, at least. YearCompass works simply. Using questions and exercises rooted in psychology it takes you through the past year, then helps you turn your dreams into achievable goals.

So let’s talk about the booklet. It’s really easy to print at home, and it’s free! The instructions say it will take about 3-4 hours to complete but I just have to say that is NOT always true. It took me no more than 2 hours, which I split up into two evenings right before bed. The booklet is broken up into two pieces. First you reflect on the past year and then you set goals for the year to come. The booklet has you start out by getting out your calendar from the year before and writing down all the important events that happened. Then you reflect on those events, broken up in categories such as ‘personal growth, career, finances, hobbies, ect’. After that you dive a little deeper into the positives and negatives. You end the 1st section by writing down the memories you need to let go of and appreciating the great events and growth that did happen. The second section is very similar to the 1st. You set goals in each aspect of your life.

I really enjoyed filling out my booklet, and do not feel like it was a painful chore that I ‘had to do’. I think taking time to reflect on all the hard work you put in the past year is really rewarding, and helps center you for the upcoming challenges. I encourage you to do the same! I second the recommendation that YearCompass gives, to make yourself a hot beverage while filling this out. Make your surroundings as cozy as possible, don’t forget to pour yourself a hot beverage and put on some comfy socks.
